Prince – “The Internet Is Over”
July 9th, 2010 by Lior ShamirPrince, in a world exclusive interview published by British tabloid, Daily Mirror, said:
“The internet’s completely over. I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it.”
“The internet’s like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good… They just fill your head with numbers and that can’t be good for you.”

I do believe the internet helps create the 15 minutes of fame syndrome.I do like the fact that it’s shrunk the world so much. I ( somebody that noboby knows from Adam) can put a song on internet radio, and people from countries I’ve never heard of have emailed me and told me how much they like the music I write. At the same time , when I put my CD on itunes it doesn’t gaurantee that it will sell.

Prince is obviously a brilliant muscisian but that of course doesn’t make him a prophet. Much respect to Prince love his music and movies, he’s one of the best ever to hit the planet no doubt, but ahh, yeah, the internet aint quite over just yet…I think we’ve got a few min. left still. =)

Prince’s career is over – not the Internet. This is typical of old school music people who are unable to adapt to the new model.

OMG! Bahahahah! That sounds like something my 75 year old mom would have said. I think, Mr. Prince, that the complete opposite is true. The Compact Disc is going to go the way of the Vinyl LP very very soon….actually, that just shows my age….it really already has. could he possibly be more out of touch?
Thanks for the laugh!

Well, coming from someone who has been able to use the Internet to their advantage, I would agree that although the Internet may not make Prince the money he was accustomed to making before this technology, it has been good for the independent artist in allowing them to have more control of their career. To most of us making a good living when competition is so high would be a blessing, but having been inside of Prince’s studio personally in Minnesota, I can see why he is disatisfied with the amount of money he is probably making now verses at the height of his career. After all……..these stars have to keep us with their decadence.

I’m not sure he means “the internet” as a whole, but just the music aspect. I think there’s some merit to what he has said about iTunes. I don’t think iTunes will last forever, but the internet will, or at least until something else comes along.
I get the feeling the guy just doesn’t know what the internet is at its roots. Technically, as long as there are computers, there will be an internet… wired or wireless. Afterall, if he has a cellular phone or digital phone line, he has already shot himself in the foot on this one.
That being said, it’s his opinion. As crazy as it sounds to most of us, he’s entitled to it. I still respect the man, nonetheless.

I think what he’s getting at is that he’s more likely to make more money if he keeps his music offline. It’s an interesting thought…

The real truth is that the age of platinum record (CD) sales is gone. We now live in the age of free music and social networking. The music artist of today must innovate to make big money!
